Poetry As A Tool For Healing & Self-Expression

Poetry has been used for centuries as a means of expression and communication. From ancient Greek epics to modern-day spoken word, poetry has always been a way for people to connect with themselves and with others. Still, many people don't realise poetry can also be used as a tool for healing and self-expression.

Which is why I felt the urge to write this post today.

For me personally, rediscovering and writing poetry in my thirties was a means to explore certain aspects of a painful past, reflect, and (finally) move on. I’m not sure why I resisted this form of writing for so long, I feel like there’s sometimes a stigma (though this thankfully seems to be changing) that poetry can be a bit wanky, a bit self-absorbed, perhaps a tad narcissistic.

But to hell with that way of thinking.

I truly believe poetry is a form of therapy we could all benefit from. There is no safer space in which to explore your emotions in a way that is both creative and personal. Poetry can be used to tackle repressed or complex feelings that can be hard to express simply by talking to someone.

By putting difficult emotions into words you can develop a deeper understanding of yourself and your experiences, and start to process them with greater insight. Even if you don’t consider yourself the type to be poetic—I know I certainly didn’t—you may find this a more enjoyable alternative to sitting in a therapist’s office spilling your darkest secrets. Somehow, writing all of mine down and sharing them with the world did more for me than 20 years of therapy ever did (I never could commit fully), and I now enjoy this art form as a regular means of self-expression; a way to connect back with myself and with others.

Because poetry can also be used to connect with other people who may have experienced similar emotions or situations. By sharing your poetry, like-minded individuals can find a sense of community and support, which can be incredibly healing. Poetry readings, workshops, and online communities all provide a space to connect with others who share our passion for writing and creativity.

So, even if you’re not ready to write just yet, reading the poetry of others could also provide valuable insights into yourself. These poetry books are some of my favourites, and my daily prompt journal may be of assistance, if you’re needing a place to start from.

Overall, poetry can be a powerful tool for healing and self-expression. By exploring our emotions in this way, we can gain insight into ourselves and our life experiences, connect with others, and find a sense of community and support.

If you're looking for a new and creative way to express yourself, I say why not give poetry a try.
